What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
Making Tax Digital is HMRC's initiative to move the UK tax system fully online. Instead of one annual tax return, you'll be required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software, with a final year-end declaration replacing the traditional Self Assessment return.
The goal is to reduce errors and make tax more real-time. In practice, it means a bigger change in routine for anyone used to doing things once a year at the end of January.
MTD for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA) is no longer on the horizon, it started rolling out from April 2026. If you're self-employed or a landlord above the earnings threshold, you need to be set up now.
Who needs to follow MTD rules?
VAT-registered businesses | Self-employed & landlords (£50k+) |
|---|---|
All VAT-registered businesses must already use MTD-compatible software for their VAT returns. This has been in effect since 2019. | If your combined income from self-employment or property is over £50,000, you must be using MTD for ITSA from April 2026. |
Self-employed & landlords (£30k+) | Lower earners |
The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027, bringing more sole traders and landlords into scope. | HMRC has confirmed further roll-out to those earning over £20,000, with a date to be announced. |
Even if your threshold date hasn't arrived yet, getting set up early means fewer headaches later. We can help you plan ahead so there's no last-minute scramble.
